Lawrence Shaw is a young drummer, percussionist, composer, and educator from Gillette, Wyoming. Shaw recently graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Music from the University of Wyoming while studying primarily jazz with Dr. Andrew Wheelock, Dr. Ben Markley, Ryan Fourt, and Ed Breazeale. Shaw’s teachers and mentors include Dr. Christian Erickson, Dr. Eric Richards, Jeffrey Lien, Tom Morgan, Keller Paulson, Erik Olson, and Jordan Wirth. Shaw plans on staying at the University of Wyoming to further his studies in jazz and Afro-Cuban percussion.
Shaw performs with many local and touring groups. He has been the drummer for the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble the last three years, and UW Symphony Orchestra principle percussionist the last two years, and drummer for touring funk/blues/folk group The Peculiar Patriots for the last three years. Shaw freelances in Wyoming and Northern Colorado with Connor Koch, Lora Sherrodd, Ben Markley, Ryan Fourt, and others. He has also appeared in Montana and the midwest on tour in the Chicago area and up to St. Paul.
Shaw performed with professional orchestral percussionist Doug Perkins (2016), jazz saxophonist Greg Osbey (UW - 2017), Snarky Puppy’s and Ghost Note’s Nate Werth with the UW percussion ensemble at Dazzle Jazz in Denver, CO (2017), and jazz trumpeter Terell Stafford at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the 2019 Jazz Education Network conferences with the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble (2017, 2019).
As an educator, Shaw teaches private lessons to students of all ages, backgrounds, and style preferences. Shaw is the percussion and drum set instructor at the University of Wyoming Music Camp where he teaches lessons, leads rhythm section and percussion sectionals, and instructs the Drum Club class. He has also taught at Rock Band Camp in Gillette, Wyoming as a drum instructor. Shaw also appears as a guest clinician to different schools in Wyoming for jazz and percussion.
In early 2017, Shaw was awarded and labeled UNC Greeley Jazz Festival's most outstanding drummer and soloist.
