Bio

Lawrence Shaw is a young drummer, percussionist, composer, and educator from Gillette, Wyoming. Shaw recently graduated with a Masters in Music Performance from the University of Wyoming while studying primarily jazz with Dr. Ben Markley, Dr. Andrew Wheelock, Ryan Fourt, and Ed Breazeale. Shaw’s teachers and mentors include Dr. Christian Erickson, Dr. Eric Richards, Jeffrey Lien, Keller Paulson, Erik Olson, and Jordan Wirth. 

 

Shaw performs with many local and touring groups. He has been the drummer for the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble the last five years, UW Symphony Orchestra principle percussionist for two years, and drummer for touring funk/blues/folk group The Peculiar Patriots for the last three years. Shaw freelances in Wyoming and Northern Colorado with Connor Koch, Lora Sherrodd, Ben Markley, Ryan Fourt, and others. Shaw is now working his way into the prolific and historical scene in Philadelphia, PA.

 

Shaw has the pleasure of performing with notable musicians inside and outside of school settings such as professional orchestral percussionist Doug Perkins, jazz saxophonist Greg Osbey, Snarky Puppy’s and Ghost Note’s percussionist Nate Werth, jazz trumpeter Terell Stafford, and jazz pianist Ben Markley. Shaw also travels nationally to perform and has had the pleasure to appear on stage at Tippet Rise Art Center in Fishtail, MT; Dazzle Jazz and Nocturne in Denver, CO; Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in New York, NY; Black Dog Cafe in St. Paul, MN; and now Chris' Jazz Cafe in Philadelphia, PA.


As an educator, Shaw teaches private lessons to students of all ages, backgrounds, and style preferences. Shaw was the percussion and drum set instructor at the University of Wyoming Music Camp for several summers where he taught lessons, lead rhythm section and percussion sectionals, and instructed the Drum Club class. He has also taught at Rock Band Camp in Gillette, WY as a drum set instructor. Shaw also appears as a guest clinician to different schools in Wyoming for jazz and percussion. As the former graduate teaching assistant for percussion and jazz, Shaw conducted weekly lessons with percussion students and taught lectures in jazz techniques.

In early 2017, Shaw was awarded and labeled UNC Greeley Jazz Festival's "most outstanding drummer and soloist," the highest distinction at the festival.
